A Glimpse into Learning at St. Andrews Sathorn
At St. Andrews International School Sathorn, our Early Years classrooms are buzzing with curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. As an Early Years Phase Lead, I’m excited to share how we help children develop the four C’s i.e.: communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking – through play and exploration. These skills are not just academic; they form the foundation for social, emotional, and cognitive growth and set the stage for a lifelong love of learning.
Communication: Express, Listen, Connect
In our classrooms, communication goes beyond talking. Storytelling, songs, role-play, and small-group discussions help children develop rich language skills and the confidence to express themselves. “We see children articulating their ideas, asking questions, and engaging confidently with both peers and adults,” shares Miss Emily Hampson-Ford. “These everyday interactions are the cornerstone of strong social and emotional development.”
Collaboration: Learning Together
Collaboration is more than sharing a toy, it’s about building empathy, respect, and problem-solving skills. In the Early Years, children work on small-group challenges, practice turn-taking, and learn to value different viewpoints. Through these experiences, they develop teamwork and a sense of collective responsibility, preparing them for future collaborative learning.
Creativity: Imagination as a Learning Tool
Creativity fuels both cognitive and emotional growth. Painting, drawing, block construction, and imaginative role-play give children opportunities to explore, invent, and test ideas. “We encourage children to take imaginative risks and try new things,” shares Miss Emily Hampson-Ford. “Creative play helps them develop resilience and originality, which supports learning across all areas.”
Critical Thinking: Curious Inquiry
Even at a young age, children are natural questioners. Through puzzles, games, open-ended prompts, and exploring different perspectives, they learn to analyse, consider alternatives, and make thoughtful decisions. Critical thinking nurtures curiosity and lays the groundwork for future problem-solving and independent learning.
A Learning Environment Designed for Exploration
Our Early Years curriculum is play-based and child-focused, with safe, inclusive spaces that encourage exploration, experimentation, and reflection. Children are supported to follow their interests and curiosity, with activities carefully guided to meet the diverse needs of every learner. Assessment is ongoing and observation-based, helping staff plan thoughtfully for each child’s development, while robust safeguarding ensures every child feels secure, valued, and confident to learn.
Engaging Families: Partners in Learning
Families are an essential part of our approach. We provide regular updates, parent-teacher conversations, and digital communications, alongside workshops and open days to extend learning beyond the classroom. As our Early Years parent shares, “The Early Years environment at St. Andrews Sathorn feels safe and stimulating; my child comes home excited to share new ideas and discoveries.”
